Solo performer: Nick Drake (vocals, guitar, piano).Recorded in 1971.Drake arrived unannounced to drop the master tapes for this album into his record company's offices before disappearing back into self-imposed seclusion. Pink Moon can be listened to as a diary of its deeply troubled creator's state of mind, a defiantly stark and uncommercial record in marked contrast to the lush autumnal beauty of his first two albums. However, it is arguably Drake's most perfect musical expression. The eleven tracks achieve a haiku-like perfection, with only a piano overdub on the title track intruding on the exquisite stillness achieved by the razor-sharp recording of Drake's acoustic guitar and his delicate voice. PREVIEW :Rolling Stone (2/17/00, p.58) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...[his] third and final album....accompanies himself only on acoustic guitar....His voice conveys, in its moans and breathy whispers, an alluring sensuality..."Entertainment Weekly (5/12/00, p.24) - "One voice, one guitar, one set of beautifully dolorous songs...the equivalent of an amble down a darkened country road. Modedl after-hours listening." - Rating: AQ (8/00, pp.112-3) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Nick Drake's best album....[Its] excellence shines through....Few records have ever sounded so intimate, or embodied Melancholy with such grace and assurance..."Mojo (7/00, p.99) - "...His masterpiece and the Robert Johnson comparisons are fully deserved..."Alternative Press (3/01, p.88) - "...With a voice paradoxically feather-light and grave, [one] of the most beautiful and melancholy albums ever recorded..."NME (8/12/00, p.28) - Ranked #8 in The NME "Top 30 Heartbreak Albums" - "...Touched with luminous symbolism and uncanny intimacy, this is the sound of inescapable retreat."

Aside from a splash of piano, the only instrumentation on this stark and spooky collection is Drake's eloquent acoustic guitar. All 11 tracks of the album, recorded in two nights with no one present but Nick and an engineer, feature only Drake's vocals, guitar and occasional piano. There are moments of unfathomable insight and heartbreak encapsulated here.
Desolation and isolation may permeate the songs, but Mr. Drake still displayed his mastery of the acoustic guitar with a touch and flair that both keep the whole recording from drowning in melancholy and testify to his considerable talents. Hence, "Pink Moon" seems as a fitting requiem for Nick Drake.
